Artistic Director & Founder
There was a time when I realised that classical dance was no longer just an art to be preserved—it was a responsibility to be protected.
As the world rapidly embraced modern influences, I began to feel a quiet concern: that the roots of our Indian culture, especially among children growing up away from India, were slowly fading. Western exposure brings opportunity and growth, but without balance, it can gently distance the next generation from the values, discipline, and cultural grounding that Indian classical arts provide.
Kathak, to me, has always been more than performance. It is history in motion, philosophy in rhythm, and culture expressed through the body. I dreamed of creating a space where this depth could be understood, respected, and lived—not just learned.
My journey took me across continents—from South America to Russia, and many places in between—where I met Indian children and international students who were curious, eager, and deeply moved by Indian culture. I saw how classical dance became a bridge—connecting them to their roots, or introducing them to a civilisation rich in grace, storytelling, and discipline.
This vision led me to work closely with the Embassy of India, serving in cultural roles that allowed me to represent and share India’s artistic heritage on global platforms. Through performances, workshops, and cultural exchanges, I witnessed how Indian classical dance could speak across languages, borders, and beliefs.
Yet my heart always returned to teaching.
Thus, MK Arts Academy – Mousumi’s Kathakalaya was born—not as an institution, but as a commitment. A commitment to nurture awareness of Indian classical dance, to train students with sincerity, and to help young minds carry culture with pride and understanding.
Today, my students learn from across the world—online and in person—each carrying a part of this journey forward. My purpose remains simple and unwavering:
to spread the beauty of Indian culture beyond India, to keep its essence alive, and to pass it on with honesty, discipline, and love.
Because when culture is lived, it never fades.
